Historic Wine Displays for Berry Bros. & Rudd
Berry Bros. & Rudd has traded from its St James’s site since 1698, making it Britain’s oldest wine and spirit merchant. The premises carry over three centuries of commercial and architectural history, where continuity and reputation are inseparable from place.
The challenge was to introduce new wine joinery, storage and retail fixtures into this historic interior without compromising its established character.
Defining the Scope Within a Historic Retail Setting
Young & Norgate were appointed to manufacture and install bespoke wine and spirit joinery, custom storage solutions and tailored till desks within the St James’s premises.
Each element was required to support contemporary retail function while respecting the proportions, materials and atmosphere of the existing interior.
Integrating Modern Function into a Heritage Interior
The project centred on balance. Wine joinery needed to provide practical display and storage capacity while maintaining the visual rhythm of the space. Till desks required durability and efficiency without appearing contemporary in tone.
Rather than introducing contrast, the joinery was developed to sit comfortably within the established environment. Proportion, detailing and material choice were resolved to complement the surrounding architecture.
Metalwork and specialist finishes were incorporated where necessary, reinforcing durability while maintaining consistency with the historic setting.
Craft, Wear and Longevity
In a building that has operated continuously for centuries, new work must anticipate long-term use. Surfaces and details were fabricated with durability in mind, designed to wear in rather than deteriorate prematurely.
Precision in fabrication ensured that new joinery and storage elements aligned cleanly within the existing structure, avoiding visual disruption within a space defined by heritage continuity.
The technical challenge was not scale or curvature, but restraint; introducing modern functionality while preserving the atmosphere that defines Berry Bros. & Rudd.
Installation Within an Operating Historic Premises
Installation required sensitivity to both the architectural fabric and the operational nature of the site. New elements were integrated into an established retail environment where continuity of character was essential.
Each component was introduced with attention to alignment, finish and fit, ensuring the additions felt considered rather than imposed.
The Result
The completed joinery, storage and till desks sit naturally within the St James’s premises, supporting contemporary retail use while maintaining the integrity of the historic interior.
Functionality is embedded within traditional form. Materials and finishes contribute to the existing character rather than competing with it.
