Crafting an Immersive Retail Experience for Berry Bros. & Rudd

A Historic Brand in a New Setting
When Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain’s oldest wine and spirits merchant, relocated their London retail space to 63 Pall Mall, they sought to create an environment that reflected their deep-rooted heritage and expertise. Young & Norgate was entrusted with a key element of this transformation, a striking feature ceiling installation that would set the tone for the entire space.
”We have enjoyed working with the Young & Norgate team on a number of projects over the last few years, and I have been continuously impressed by their ability, attitude and attention to detail.”
Geordie Willis, Creative Director
Reclaimed Craftsmanship: A Ceiling with a Story
The centrepiece of this ambitious project was the repurposing of century-old wine barrels, sourced from a remote location in the South of France. These barrels, rich with history and character, were carefully extracted and transported to London, where they would become the defining feature of the new retail interior.
Suspending aged oak barrels above the store required not only expert craftsmanship but also precise engineering. Young & Norgate worked closely with designers and structural specialists to ensure a seamless and secure installation. The result is an atmospheric, cavernous space that echoes the cellars where Berry Bros. & Rudd’s wines are traditionally aged, an authentic nod to the brand’s legacy.
A Unique Blend of Heritage & Innovation
This project was about more than aesthetics; it was about storytelling. The combination of historic materials and contemporary design techniques allowed Berry Bros. & Rudd to honour their past while creating a visually compelling, immersive retail environment.
